Fly Fishing Stories

Key takeaways:

The Shoshone people have lived on the eastern slope of Wyoming’s Wind River Range for more than 10,000 years. The Wind River, which flows through their homeland, has deep meaning for them and the Northern Arapaho, the tribe they now share this land with. The water is crucial to their way of life, history and customs. After hundreds of years of witnessing their waters, lands and culture come under constant attack, there is hope that an outdoor-based, sustainable recreational economy could flourish here.As a high schooler in the public-housing projects of Richmond, Virginia’s East End, Monte Cosby felt his future was limited—until mountain bikes offered him a different route forward. In the years since, the bike has served as the bridge between two different worlds and a vehicle to overcome the struggles along the way.

Save Our Basin

Stand With Cuyama Against Corporate Greed

Grimmway Farms and Bolthouse Farms, the world’s largest carrot growers, produce 80% of the U.S. carrot market (an annual crop worth $69 million) and together they pump over 40% of the Cuyama Valley basin’s water supply. Last year they pumped 28,500 acre-feet of water; enough water to supply three cities the size of Santa Barbara with a year's worth of water. Now they’re suing every homeowner, business, small-scale farmer, rancher - even our schools - for rights to the water we all depend on.

Monte Cosby

Like many across the United States today, Demonte Cosby’s life growing up in the inner city of Richmond, Virginia, could be described with phrases such as gun violence. Single-parent home. Poverty. Drugs. Sirens. Trauma.

But one day, someone got Monte on a bike. He learned how to navigate obstacles. How to start well and finish sprinting. How to pass on a narrow trail, and when to let others pass. Biking became more than two wheels, and one mantra a way of life: Can’t stop. Won’t stop.

He’s excited to tell you a part of his story, one that also includes phrases like college senior. Mentor. Older brother and role model. Proud son.
